THE ramadhan bazaars, ubiquitous in most areas in Malaysia during the fasting month, boast some of the best of Malay and Muslim cuisines. Makeshift stalls are set up to create a bazaar-like atmosphere and visitors are often spoilt for choice on the variety of food that is served up. While the food is often state-specific, the ambience, which takes on an almost carnival-like feeling is quite universal. Penang, being the food capital of the country, definitely showcases some of the best markets around. Synonymous with the state, the pasembur (peanut sauce salad), murtabak, various types of kuih, popiah, nasi ulam (herbed rice), are ever present. Nonetheless, these bazaars also sell many food items that cannot be easily found otherwise. For instance, many stalls at the Tanjung Tokong bazaar, one of the areas that has a designated ramadhan market, retail halal versions of lor bak, roti daging goreng, etc. Related links
