WAT BUPPHARAM Thai Buddhist Temple in Pulau Tikus is a relatively small temple complex which is nonetheless boasting one of the largest temple arches in Penang. The temple was built in 1942 by a Thai Buddhist monk named Phothan Srikheaw who became the first Chief Abbot of this temple. Upon entering the main building of the complex, one may notice the statue of the founding father covered in gold leaf, as a form of respect to the departed monk.
Very interestingly, the temple grounds showcase an array of statues, sourced from various religions, including Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism. One may not only notice the statue of Lord Ganesh, the elephant headed Hindu deity but also the statue of goddess Kuan Yin, and a statue representing Mahayana Bodhisattva.
Wat Buppharam is sometimes also referred to as The Temple of the Lifting Buddha. Devotees seeking blessings or guidance attempt to lift the one foot tall Buddha image and being able to lift the statue with or without much pressure provides the devotee with the direction he / she is in search of. Read here for the official guide on the lifting of the Buddha.
